SIBU: An unoccupied block of 40-door charcoal factory workers’ quarters in Jalan Bawang Assan, here was engulfed in flames on yesterday (Mar 19).

A spokesman for the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) said they received an emergency call around 10.50 pm and deployed firemen from Sungai Merah and Sibu stations to the scene.

Upon arrival, they found that the block was already engulfed in flames and was beyond saving.

However, they managed to save two more blocks consisting of 60 doors from total destruction.

Fortunately, no injuries or casualties were reported in the inferno.

Once the situation was deemed safe, the team wrapped up the operation at 1.45 am and headed back to their stations.

The cause of the fire and losses incurred are still under investigation.
