KUCHING: The benefits of the Covid-19 vaccine outweigh its risks, said Bandar Kuching MP Dr Kelvin Yii.
“One thing we must remember — a safe vaccine does not mean it is 100 percent free of adverse effects. Vaccine offers protection, and like an air bag in a car, it may cause some burns or wounds, but it protects your life.
“So the benefits hugely outweigh the risks,” he said in a Facebook post.
Dr Yii said based on the data collected from vaccination programmes, a huge majority of the recipients did not experience adverse effects.
“Some of the side effects are like soreness at the part of body which was injected, weakness and maybe fever among others.
“But post-immunisation reactions are good when the Covid-19 vaccine has started working. As your body is reacting to it, it produces cytokines, inducing an immune response,” he said.
On Tuesday, the Bandar Kuching MP participated in an online forum on Zoom on the Covid-19 vaccines where a number of concerns were raised by the public.
“Many important questions were answered including doubts raised, especially whether a person with underlying chronic diseases can or should take the vaccine.
“Many of the myths, misinformation and fake news were also debunked by the experts on the panel,” he said.
Dr Yii said public confidence was crucial for the success of Malaysia’s national Covid-19 immunisation programme.
“We all play a role to be information frontliners in getting the right message backed by science and data to the community.
“In the event that we come across inaccurate information, we can then also properly counter them and educate the people around us on the benefits of the vaccine,” he said.
