Valentine’s Day is an annual festival to celebrate romantic love, friendship and admiration. Every year on February 14, people celebrate this day by sending messages of love and affection to partners, family and friends. To mark the occasion, the New Sarawak Tribune asked four couples how they would celebrate the special day this year.
Bong Eng Cheak, 29
“To me, it’s important that I celebrate Valentine’s Day with my wife. It is a traditional celebration for us, and celebrating with a partner makes this day extra romantic. I would usually give her flowers and a present. Then, we would have a romantic dinner in a restaurant of her choice.”
Song Yee Hong, 29
“Valentine’s Day celebrations can bring a couple closer, especially married ones, as we go through our busy lives. Nevertheless, we should always express our love to our partner everyday, and not just during special occasions like Valentine’s Day and birthdays. I think that love is always worth celebrating. This year, Valentine’s is extra special because we will be spending it with our newborn son.”
Jessa Tan Le Le, 25
“Valentine’s Day is a day of chance whereby people can express to their friends or loved ones how special they are. It is a day to celebrate relationships, whatever they may be. To me, a perfect date consists of a short walk by the beach, a simple dinner together and just talking about anything.”

“I don’t think spending Valentine’s Day is important. To me, it is just like any other day. If there is love, every day can be Valentine’s Day. Each year, my husband and I would just chill and relax with our children. If it falls on the weekend, perhaps we will just watch a movie together at home. Otherwise, it is like any usual day of eating, resting, sleeping and playing with the kids.”
