BINTULU: Bintulu Division has been identified as a hotspot for utility and telecommunications vandalism, a trend that has become increasingly concerning.
Minister for Utilities and Telecommunications, Datuk Julaihi Narawi said that this situation poses a significant threat to essential services, including street lights, electric cables, and telecommunications equipment that are vital to community well-being.
He explained that acts of vandalism targeting utility and telecommunications infrastructure not only disrupt public services but also increase security risks and cause substantial financial losses for repairs.
“In 2023, there have been 1,406 cases of vandalism against utility and telecommunications infrastructure, with estimated losses amounting to RM20 million,” he said at the 2024 Bintulu Division Vandalism Prevention Campaign Against Utility and Telecommunication Facilities.
The event was officiated by Minister for Food Industry, Commodities and Regional Development, Datuk Seri Dr Stephen Rundi Utom on Tuesday (Oct 29).
Julaihi stressed the need for joint efforts and cooperation from all levels of society and relevant agencies to curb this trend and ensure constant monitoring of critical areas.
“Community awareness is crucial to protecting public facilities from becoming targets of vandalism.
“This campaign will also educate the community about the negative impacts of vandalism and the importance of maintaining utility infrastructure for the public good,” he added.
He expressed hope that immediate action can reduce vandalism and ensure that utility and telecommunications facilities in Bintulu operate smoothly for the benefit of all citizens.
