KUCHING: Hope Place got a call recently from one of the families under its care, asking for further assistance.
Ayai Tom, 67, used to work as a security guard, but in 2016, he was involved in a motorcycle accident and suffered serious injuries to his back and leg.
Since then, he is wheelchair-bound and in 2017, Hope Place started to help him and his wife by giving them food.
Ayai’s wife, Doris Neclios, 57, used to sell vegetables to support her family. However, due to the outbreak of the pandemic earlier this year, her vending area was forced to close.
Her family had no source of income throughout the movement control order (MCO).
After the local government made an announcement for small businesses to reopen again, Doris had found a place for vendors to rent at Desa Wira, Batu Kawa here, which is not far from their home.
Hope Place assisted her in getting a small tent, which costs about RM200, for her to sell her goods.
Doris is grateful for the assistance provided for a chance to earn a living once again.
Due to the pandemic, Hope place is not accepting any second-hand items as a donation to the needy.
For more information, Hope Place can be reached at 013-567 2775. Currently it is taking care of more than 190 needy families.
Its operating hours are from 8.30am to 5.30pm from Monday till Friday and 8.45am to 12 noon on Saturdays.
Donations can be made to Persatuan Kebajikan Harapan Kuching (Maybank — 5112-8900-1160).
