MIRI: A veteran male basketball player from Labuan tragically passed away after collapsing on the sidewalk in front of Icon Cafe, Jalan Pelita 4, Pelita Commercial Centre, on Friday afternoon.

The man, who was in his 50s, was here to participate in the 33rd Veteran ASEAN Basketball Tournament, which runs from September 5 to 9.

Prior to the incident, the deceased had been out for lunch with friends. After their meal, he suddenly collapsed. His friends immediately attempted to revive him by performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), but sadly, their efforts were unsuccessful, and he died at the scene.

Miri police chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu confirmed the incident, stating that the case is being classified as a sudden death.

“The case is still under investigation,” he said.

He also urged the public not to speculate or share sensitive information on social media as it could cause distress to the local community.
