KUCHING: It was a joyous day for some 713 retired and veteran soldiers as they were awarded the Malaysian Service Medal (PJM) yesterday (Aug 21).
The medal represents the country’s appreciation to the soldiers for their bravery, courage, sacrifice and loyalty in contributing to Malaysia’s freedom from the threat of communists.
New Sarawak Tribune managed to get a few words from some of veterans who were happy to receive the medals during an awarding ceremony at Imperial Hotel.
Mokti Sarik, 68
I served in the armed forces for 22 years and upon receiving the Malaysian Service Medal (PJM), I felt very moved that my service as a retired soldier was appreciated.
The fatigue and tiredness (that I have) endured no matter in the wilderness or anywhere, will be remembered by the community and the country. I will remember this experience forever.
Yacob Mahidin, 65
I am very proud and grateful for this medal awarded to me. I have been in the Malaysian Armed Forces for 21 years.
Surya Pinar, 64
I have served in the armed forces for 10 years from 1977 to 1987. I was very happy and excited when I received this PJM medal.
This moment is the moment I have been looking forward to because I have finally been awarded the trust and appreciation of the Malaysian government.
