KUCHING: The Sarawak tennis’s team is chasing their first bronze medal in the mixed team event after a narrow 2-3 loss to the Federal Territories in the semifinals on Sunday (Aug 18).

The competition started off tough for the home team, as they suffered defeats in both the men’s and women’s singles matches.

In the men’s singles, Ayden Shah Deen Heshaam lost 0-6, 1-6 to Federal Territories player Leroy Yong.

Meanwhile, Sarawak’s women’s singles player Nathanielle Lee fell to Phang Nao Ziyi with a score of 0-6, 1-6.

However, Sarawak bounced back in the women’s doubles, where Lydia Leong and Eliora Hii secured a solid 6-3, 6-2 victory.

The men’s doubles team, Raidon Tan and Hii Shieng Wee, also delivered a strong performance, defeating Aqil Abdul Rahman and Nicholas Kong 6-1, 6-3.

In the mixed doubles match, Matthew Goh and Soo Hui Yii faced a tough challenge and ultimately lost to Darrshan Suresh Kumar and Daania Daniella Abd Hazli, with a final score of 7(5)-6, 3-6, 3-10.

On Monday (Aug 19), Sarawak will compete against Selangor for the bronze medal.
Meanwhile, the Federal Territories will go head-to-head with Perak for the gold medal.

The mixed team event runs from August 16 to 19, while the individual events are scheduled from August 19 to 23.
