MUKAH: Over 250 residents from various villages in Pulau Bruit participated in an environmental awareness programme hosted by the Natural Resources and Environment Board Sarawak (NREB) yesterday.
According to NREB in a press release, the event aimed to raise awareness on environmental conservation and foster community responsibility for sustainable practices.
NREB Environmental Quality Controller Datuk Jack Liam, in the release, reaffirmed the board’s dedication to maintaining a “Green, Clean, and Healthy” Sarawak through ongoing environmental management and sustainable development efforts.
The programme’s objectives included raising awareness about river cleanliness, particularly issues surrounding improper waste disposal and waterborne diseases.
The event also encouraged the Pulau Bruit community to take responsibility for their surroundings and highlighted the roles and functions of relevant government agencies in environmental conservation.
Additionally, it aimed to strengthen relationships between government agencies and the local community through open dialogues and collaborative activities.
Villages represented at the event included Kampung Bruit, Kampung Masjid Tekajong, Kampung Baru Tekajong, Kampung Penipah, Kampung Salah Kecil, Kampung Betanak, Kampung Penuai, and Kampung Penibong Daro.
The programme also featured talks by the Matu and Daro District Councils, the Daro District Health Office, the Sarawak Rivers Board, and Mukah Polytechnic. Key topics covered included solid waste management, river safety and cleanliness and practical steps towards environmental sustainability.
A compost-making demonstration illustrated how food waste could be repurposed into natural fertiliser, thereby reducing waste and greenhouse gas emissions.
Furthermore, environmental education modules were conducted with teachers and students from SK Kampung Tekajong, reinforcing sustainable practices among the younger generation.
