KUCHING: Villagers at Kampung Simuti, Padawan near here are hoping that a newly-constructed multi-purpose hall in the village can be completed by the end of the year.
According to the chairman of the Village Development and Security Committee (JKKK) Marik Endom, the double-storey multi-purpose hall, measuring 48 feet wide and 60 feet long when completed will cost around RM150,000.
“The estimated cost refers to the cost of buying building materials only because we are building it on a gotong-royong basis,” said Marik.
“We have received grants totaling RM20,000 from our local YBs and with that amount we have started constructing the hall. However, we still need another RM130,000 for buying building materials” he added.
The village which consists of 50 houses with a population of about 400 people has never had a community hall till today.
“We want the multi-purpose hall to be completed as soon as possible as we do not have a proper place to carry out activities like meetings, celebrations or various functions. All this while, we are using the church building” said church leader Naris Rop.
He added that apart from the multi-purpose hall, the villagers also need a new church building as the present one is already very old and too small to accommodate the increasing population of the village.
Yesterday, the villagers received a grant of RM2,000 from Deputy Minister of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Chong Chieng Jen.
A cheque for the amount was presented by his political secretary Sanjan Daik, who was at the village to view the work progress on the multi-purpose hall.
Marik said the money would be used to upgrade footpaths in the village.
“We hope Chong could give us some funds for our multi-purpose hall,” added Marik.
