BETONG: Sixty youth and women from Beting Maro attended an English Language Workshop for Social Media in a Jom Berambeh programme,‘The Journey’ at Kampung Beladin and Semarang on Friday (Feb 4).

The participants comprised 20 residents each from three fishing villages of Kampung Semarang, Sepinang, and Beladin.

The workshop was organised by Universiti Teknologi Mara (UITM) Sarawak branch in collaboration with village committee members and Pan Pacific and South East Asia Women’s Association (PPSEAWA).

UITM Sarawak branch’s Academy of Language Studies and University Community Transformation Centre (UCTC) coordinator Dr Azlina Bujang said the workshop was among her efforts to share how to practise the use of English in social media, especially among rural youths.

She explained that the workshop encompassed several elements including the teaching of simple English phrases to be uploaded as well as basic techniques.

“Social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and so on are useful to highlight traditional products and tourist destinations in the area.

“With this workshop, we can share how to upload tourism activities and products using English as well as techniques to produce Boost sites and systems on social media,” she said.

She said this while speaking at the food basket handover ceremony at the Kampung Semarang An-Nur surau compound on Friday (Feb 4).

She added that a cooking competition programme was also held which aimed to document a recipe book on Saribas traditional food.

Meanwhile, a representative of Beting Maro assemblyman, Zakaria Mos, urged the youths to take full advantage of the programme to increase the development of the digital economy in rural areas.

He also stressed the importance of the use of English on social media in promoting traditional products as well as interesting tourism areas around the Beting Maro area.

The Jom Berambeh – The Journey 2022 programme began with the handing over of food baskets to 30 residents from the three aforementioned fishing villages.
