MARUDI: Swift action of the villagers of Long Ikang, Baram saved their 74-door longhouse from being burnt down early yesterday morning.
Upon spotting the fire from one of the kitchens which then spread to the other adjacent kitchens, the villagers immediately sprung to action and used fire extinguishers to put it out.
No injuries were reported in the incident.
According to Miri Fire and Rescue Department chief Supt Law Poh Kiong, the fire is believed to have started from a burning charcoal prepared earlier for a barbecue activity in one of the kitchens.
“The flames started at 12am, and they managed to put it out by 2.30am this morning,” said Law.
The longhouse has a total of 1,000 villagers residing in it.
A team of firemen from Marudi Fire station led by Maureen Sim was dispatched to the scene after being notified of the incident at 9.15am, to conduct investigations.
Law said the longhouse had recently bought fire insurance.
