MIRI: Upgrading work at the Sarawak Visitor’s Information Centre here is nearing completion, with the contractor assuring the job will be completed soon.
According to Deputy Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Datuk Sebastian Ting, 96 percent of the work has been completed.
“This enhancement is crucial considering Miri’s abundant attractions, including the renowned Mulu National Park, designated as a Unesco World Heritage Site…and soon, hopefully, Gua Niah will be successfully enlisted as Sarawak’s second Unesco World Heritage Site,”he told local media on Tuesday, after conducting a site visit to the Visitor’s Information Centre.
The RM500,000 upgrading project is part of Ting’s Rural Transformation Programme (RTP).
The ongoing upgrading work is the second phase of improvements, following the successful completion of the first phase which incurred a cost of RM250,000.
Construction commenced on Nov 22, last year, with an initial completion target set for Feb 31 this year but various challenges, notably adverse weather conditions, led to delays in the project timeline.
“The contractor has given an assurance that the upgrading works will be completed within a week from now,” Ting said.
Once completed, the centre will be declared open by Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Minister Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.
