MUKAH: Unsustainable or uncontrolled activities will result in environmental damage that will eventually lead to economic decline, warns Mukah MP Datuk Hanifah Hajar Taib.
“Human life depends on the ecosystem that God has created. Alhamdulillah, our country is still endowed with a wealth of flora and fauna and a sustainable ecosystem.
“Stable and healthy environmental conditions will encourage a healthy society. Therefore, it is our responsibility as human beings not to be careless or negligent in maintaining it while continuing to enhance economic growth and development as well as national development.
“This effort requires the cooperation of all levels of society to play their respective roles,” she said at the opening of the Mukah Division Environmental Day 2022.
A total of 100 saplings were planted around the Kala Dana Mukah Beach area in conjunction with the event.
Hanifah said the cooperation demonstrated during the commencement of the programme proved that everyone is concerned about ensuring the well-being of the environment.
She said the said celebration was a platform to raise awareness among the public and take action to maintain environmental sustainability either individually or in an integrated manner, both at the district, division and state levels.
“Efforts to hold various programmes, activities, events themed on environmental care should be actively implemented, especially in the Mukah Division. We not only care about the physical and social development of the people in Mukah Division, but we also want to see the community in Mukah Division be aware of the importance of caring for the environment.
“Let us sit back and think for a moment on why global action to address the issue of ecosystem degradation is emphasised. The damage and pollution of the environment that we see around us is the result of the activities we do,” she added.
“I hope this will be a platform to inspire people to switch to green and sustainable practices, habits and alternatives,” she reiterated.
For the record, tree planting activities were launched during the said programme along with a gotong royong session to clean the beach which involved various agencies and the public.
“With such activities for the community, the government’s efforts towards achieving the target of planting 500,000 new trees by 2035 can be achieved.
“I believe this is also one of the efforts to restore our ecosystem because planting trees not only acts as carbon absorbers and produces oxygen, it also cleans our air, prevents soil erosion and beautifies the environment,” she pointed out.
