KUCHING: Matang Vocational College signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with 14 companies to provide on-job training for its students.
Tupong State Assemblyman Fazzrudin Abdul Rahman, who represented Minister of Works and Member of Parliament for Petra Jaya Datuk Seri Haji Fadillah Yusof, witnessed the signing ceremony held at Yayasan Sarawak here, yesterday.
Speaking at the event, Fazzrudin said that the state government had always been supportive of whatever efforts taken to promote Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) among Sarawak youths.
“The state government wants to ensure that there is a wide platform for youths to be able to pursue TVET; that is the role of the government,” he said.
He further explained that skills training was just as important as gaining knowledge because employers would prefer hiring graduates who already possessed working experience.
“You need the skills obtained from training to balance out the knowledge you’ve gained to know how to succeed in the real world.
“Thus, this will produce graduates who are ready to work,” said Fazzrudin.
He also said the measurement of success was not by examination grades or how many degrees one had, but rather one’s values and commitment.
“It is measured by your attitude in life and how committed you would be to getting your job done.
“To some, it may be measured by how much they earn so they can take care of their families,” he said, adding that success could also be very subjective.
Fazzrudin encouraged students taking TVET to be proud of what they were doing because what they learned would complement well with those who were in academics, creating a well-balanced environment.
Also present were Director of Technical and Vocational Education Zainuren Mohd Nor and Matang Vocational College director Haji Mohamad Sahran Haji Amin.
