SIBU: Sarawak’s women’s indoor volleyball team made a powerful statement in their opening Group Y match of the 21st Malaysia Games (SUKMA) today (Aug 18), sweeping aside Terengganu in straight sets.
The home team dominated from the outset, claiming the first set 25-11.
They continued their strong form into the second set, winning convincingly 25-9.
Sarawak completed the whitewash with a 25-13 victory in the third set.
Next up for Sarawak is a clash with last year’s SUKMA runners-up, Selangor.
The match is scheduled for 4pm tomorrow (Aug 19) at the Rejang Park Volleyball Court.
Sarawak’s Thailand-based coach, Sanong Kulchim, was pleased with his team’s performance.
“The Sarawak team took full advantage of their home court and easily defeated Terengganu,” he said after the match.
“They displayed strong capabilities and excellent teamwork.”
“Tomorrow’s match will be exciting and challenging,” he said.
“Although Selangor had a tough game against Pahang, I believe Sarawak has a good chance of winning. We will give our best to secure consecutive victories and bring joy to our home crowd.”
Meanwhile, Selangor suffered a 2-3 defeat to Pahang in their opening match.
Sarawak will need to finish at least second in the group to advance to the semifinals.
