MIRI: The Malaysian Red Crescent (MRC) Miri Branch recently conducted a comprehensive fire drill simulation at its Training Institute’s Lecture Hall.
The exercise, which ran from 8 am to 5 pm, aimed to test and improve the emergency response capabilities of 25 Disaster Management (DM) members and volunteers.
The scenario simulated a fire breaking out in the MRC’s 3R building, originating in a storage area and quickly spreading to the surrounding 3R zone.
As thick smoke and intense heat engulfed the building, visibility was significantly reduced, making evacuation a challenging task.
The fire alarm system was activated, alerting occupants of the danger.
However, the fire department experienced a 15-minute delay due to traffic and distance.
Participants were tasked with implementing a coordinated emergency response, focusing on practical disaster management skills.
Facilitator teams oversaw the exercise, ensuring adherence to safety protocols and providing hands-on experience in high-stress evacuation scenarios.
The fire drill was part of the MRC Miri Branch Disaster Management Sub-committee’s Disaster Management and Skill Enhancement Workshop (SEW) initiative.
This initiative aimed to equip MRC members and volunteers with the necessary skills to effectively respond to emergencies and strengthen their overall response capacity.
