KUCHING: The welfare of the volunteers for the Malaysia Games (SUKMA) 2024 will be recognised with tokens of appreciation for their service and will not be neglected.

Sarawak Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Deputy Minister, Datuk Gerald Rentap Jabu stated that rumours claiming the SUKMA 2024 volunteers will not be compensated are false.

Instead, Rentap said the volunteers will receive tokens of appreciation in the form of monetary rewards managed by the Sarawak Youth and Sports Department.

“Indeed, we are not paying allowances since they are volunteers, but we will provide tokens as a form of appreciation for their dedication and spirit in helping ensure the success of this event,” he said.

He was speaking to reporters at the ‘Kembara Jumpa Orang Muda’ programme with Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports Adam Adli Abd Halim at the Sarawak Youth and Sports Complex yesterday.

Rentap then said that approximately 50 sports venues across nine divisions in Sarawak will be used for the SUKMA 2024, which will take place later this month.

He added that over 4,000 volunteers, including those from government agencies, will be involved to ensure the smooth running of the SUKMA event.

So far, 2,816 individuals from government agencies have registered as volunteers.

Furthermore, he said that more than 20 special committees, covering areas such as logistics and food, have been established to manage the SUKMA event.

“I can say we will need over 4,000 volunteers behind the scenes to make this event successful, including members from government bodies,” he said.
