KUCHING: All Sarawakians that aged 21 and above and have not register as a voter is urge to do so as soonest possible.
Persatuan Pemangkin Daya Masyarakat or R.O.S.E (Rise of Social Efforts) will operate the counter from 11am until 7pm on Feb 1 and 2 on the ground floor of the mall.
“We suggest that all Sarawakians aged 21 and above to register as soon as possible in order to vote in the next state election,” said a representative of the association.
A spokesperson from the association also added that the ‘Undi 18’ policy and automatic registration had not been implemented despite amendments to the Federal Constitution in Parliament.
“According to the chairman of Election Commission, the automatic registration policy will be implemented on July 2021, and the same goes for lower voting age from 21 to 18 years old,” the spokesperson added.
The application process for new registration will take three to four months to be approved by Election Commission. Therefore, people are urged to immediately register themselves.
“Perhaps many people do not know if the next state election will be held this year or next year. This means that Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg can announce the dissolution of the state assembly and hold a state election at any time,” the spokesperson added.
In addition, it will be a challenge for young Sarawakians who do not participate in voting or register themselves as voters to voice out their rights.
In fact, it would be a loss to them, so the registration counter is the first step for them to get involved in the state’s democratic system.
People who are aged 21 and above are encouraged to visit Matang Mall to register themselves as new voters.
