KUCHING: The Sarawak Workers Party (SWP) is requesting a year’s road tax waiver for recipients of Bantuan Sara Hidup (BSH) and Bantuan Prihatin Nasional (BPN).
It also wants the waiver to apply to all workers in the country.
SWP secretary general Lavenia Mawas said the move would mitigate the hardship of those whose income had been affected by the movement control order (MCO) amid the Covid-19 pandemic.
“Labour and workers are a key element in nation building. Their plight should be looked into especially now, when our workers are badly hit economically,” she said in a statement in conjunction with Labour Day today.
She lamented that some workers had lost their jobs or had their salary deducted due to the coronavirus pandemic.
“I believe Malaysian workers are resilient, strong and well-prepared to face the possibility of the bad days ahead.
“Therefore, SWP urges employers to have sympathy and as far as possible do their best to keep their workers,” she said.
