KUCHING: The Lions Club of Kuching North is organising ‘Walk with the Blind 2’ to get members of the public to fully understand what it feels like to be blind. The event, to be held on Nov 3, aims to help raise funds for the club’s signature Sight First Programme that was started 29 years ago.
Slight Preservation, Awareness/Action Lions Club of Kuching North Director, Lion Dr Chan Tiang Ho explained that the event is aimed at gathering people to walk in blindfolds with the blind.
“Aside from the fundraising, we really want the participants to understand the hardships faced by the blind daily. We want them to be more compassionate not only towards the blind but also those with varying handicap,” he said.
The event will be held at the grounds of MBKS along Canna Lily Boulevard from 4pm to 6pm.
Meanwhile, the Lions Club of Kuching North is the only club in Sarawak that offers cornea transplants for the needy. Each transplant can cost up to RM2,000.
Almost all recipients are from the lower income group and from different parts of Sarawak. They sustained injuries at works or infections to the eyes and need a full cornea transplant to save their eye(s) and if possible restore their vision.
All the patients are operated on by ophthalmologists from Sarawak General Hospital.
Members of the public who wish to take part in the event are required to register at the counter of the MBKS building before 4pm on the event date. Those who intend to donate to the club may do so through Public Bank Account No 3151595429 and WhatsApp the deposit slip to 012-8987071.
Those who donated more than RM100 can get a free T-shirt on a first come, first served basis.
