KUCHING: The organic waste composting at Petanak Market and Stutong Community Market helps redirect almost 21 tonnes of waste from the landfill every quarter, extending its life expectancy.

The Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng said that the council is actively involved in the initiative to reduce the amount of waste sent to the landfill.

He said that the public has been supporting their weekly buy back campaigns, drop off centres, and commercial lot collections.

According to him, from January until May, the council estimated diverting around 24 tonnes of recyclable items.

Wee said this during the launch of the 2023 City Cleanliness Month at the Community Hall on Jalan Padungan, which took place on Saturday.

He emphasised that the MBKS Cleanliness Month focuses not only on public cleansing but also on beautifying the city’s landscape and monitoring food safety and quality in supermarkets.

Wee believes that keeping the city clean is a collective responsibility.

Furthermore, he mentioned that Kuching South is recognised internationally as a Tourist and Healthy City. He attributed this achievement to the Kuching South Green Plan, which strives to set elevated standards for public health and create a pleasant environment for a good quality of life.
