KUCHING: Remember the water buffalo statue with a peculiar facial expression situated in Serian?

It has gone viral on social media, gained so much popularity and to an extent netizens are producing and sharing memes related to it recently.
Now, the water buffalo is even making an appearance on Shopee, an online marketplace that enables users to purchase and sell products.
Shopee is using it as an image to promote the related rice cookers products.
It attaches an image of the water buffalo and along with a song in four lines which reads ‘Perut oh perut, Kenapa engkau sakit? Macam-mana aku tak sakit, Makan nasi mentah’. (Tummy oh tummy, why are you in pain? How could I not be sick? I ate that raw rice).
“Tu lah, lain kali masaklah nasi guna rice cooker yang dijamin SIRIM dekat Shopee. Barulah tak terkejut macam kerbau ni. (That is why, next time cook rice using a rice cooker that is certified by SIRIM and available on Shoppe. Then you won’t be surprised like this buffalo),” said Shopee in a post.
The post has since received over 11,000 likes, 867 shares and 471 comments.
Meanwhile, a Facebook user commented, “Is the admin (of Shopee) from Sarawak?”
Another Facebook user said the water buffalo statue has become so famous that it got the attention of Shopee.
Furthermore, another Facebook user said one must head over to Serian and take a photo with the buffalo statue before it is gone.
Another Facebook user said Serian is widely known after its buffalo has become an Internet sensation.
New Sarawak Tribune had reached out to Shopee customer service and they had confirmed the image was related to the buffalo statue in Serian.
Earlier, it was reported that it was an old statue and is under the jurisdiction of the Serian District Council.
The repainting of the statue also falls under the responsibility of the council as well.
