KUCHING: The government is studying the Similajau River basin to address issues and challenges pertaining to water conservation.

Local Government and Housing Minister Datuk Seri Dr Sim Kui Hian said that through the study, the Water Balance Development Programme will be carried out to improve the existing monitoring system and standard operating procedures (SOPs) including water quality during drought seasons.

“This is to enable the state government to have the latest information to help manage the distribution of water resources more systematically,” he said during a ‘gotong royong’ programme in conjunction with the Kuching District Level World Water Day 2021 which is celebrated every March 22 at the Kampung Rantau Panjang on Saturday (Mar 27).

Dr Sim, who is also Batu Kawa assemblyman, said it is important to address issues and challenges of water resources, such as when there is flood and when there is drought.

“In fact, the quality of water is deteriorating due to pollution and it can be seen that there are no aquatic life such as prawns or fish in the river,” he said.

He said the government’s commitment to managing the water resources systematically is an important effort because water is a very valuable resource and must be managed as best as possible for the country’s development, sustainability and to preserve the ecosystem.

“Although our country is blessed with abundant resources, the people, especially the younger generation should appreciate and understand this.

“Do not take the matter lightly and underestimate the management of these water resources. As for instance in Saudi Arabia, their water is more expensive than petroleum,” he said.

Dr Sim also reminded the people not to throw rubbish into the river as it is unhygienic and could contribute to water pollution.

Also present at the function were Batu Kitang assemblyman Lo Khere Chiang, Political Secretary to the Chief Minister Tan Kai and state Irrigation and Drainage Department director Datuk Chok Moi Soon.
