SIBU: About 10,000 participants thronged the Sibu Jaya Water Fiesta held at Sibu Jaya Boulevard here yesterday.

The event, organised for the fourth time by Amcorp Group Sdn Bhd (Amcorp) in collaboration with the Sibu Rural District Council (SRDC), featured a variety of activities that drew in locals along with their families and friends.

Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said that the event can create a strong family institution.

“Families in this area have come together with us here at this moment. They bring their children.

“Therefore, it (water fiesta) is good for family bonding and the family institution,” he said when met by reporters after officiating at the programmes here yesterday.

Abdul Karim also highlighted the event’s ability to foster stronger ties among people from diverse backgrounds in the area.

“We are aware that Sibu Jaya is home to a diverse, multi-racial population, including Dayak, Malay, and Chinese residents.

“When they come together in events like this, it promotes better relationships among these different ethnic groups,” he added.

Abdul Karim commended Amcorp for its dedication to developing Sibu Jaya and for organising an event reminiscent of Thailand’s Songkran festival.

Azman speaks to reporters.

“Amcorp is a company that has played a significant role in developing this area from a very small region to a fully developed satellite town, for that reason, we express our gratitude to AmCorp Group,” he added.

Meanwhile, Amcorp executive chairman Tan Sri Azman Hashim expressed his gratitude for the substantial support from the state government in developing Sibu Jaya to its current state.

“We hope that the state government will continue to support us in the development of Sibu Jaya and its programmes,” he said.

Also present were Deputy Minister for Public Health, Housing and Local Government Michael Tiang Ming Tee, SRDC chairman Sempurai Petrus Ngelai and others.
