KEMAMAN: Ten members of a family, including a 4-year-old child, fell victim to a sudden water surge at Jeram Mawar, Air Putih.

The tragic incident has so far claimed the lives of two individuals, who were discovered by civilians around 12.30pm.

The body of a 40-year-old woman was found floating approximately 24 kilometres downstream from the scene, while her 11-year-old son was rescued after being stranded on a tree branch about 2 kilometres away.

Eight family members remain missing and efforts to locate the missing individuals are ongoing as search operations continue today.

Originating from Felda Lepar Hilir, Kuantan, Pahang, the family had arrived at the river for a leisurely outing around 2pm on Saturday (July 1), as revealed by the police during a media briefing held at the Kemaman District Police Headquarters.

The victims were caught off guard by the sudden surge of water, which rapidly rose by 5 to 10 metres, leaving them with little chance to escape.
