SIBU: Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) needs time to prune tree branches in the city.
Its chairman Clarence Ting said it could not be carried out overnight, especially for trees in the city area.
“This is because if we do it on a weekday, the streets will be congested and it will be difficult for the public. That is why the contractor can only carry this out during weekends,” he said while inspecting trees being pruned at Jalan Tuanku Osman on Saturday.
He said this in response to members of the public who questioned why it took a long time for tree pruning work to be carried out, and why does it occur during weekends.
Ting also expressed hope that people would understand that it is not easy to do pruning work in the city.
“For example, in Jalan Tuanku Osman here, our contractor has done it twice every Saturday starting last week. This road is located in the city centre.
“If we do it on a working day, it will definitely be difficult and cause inconvenience among road users. Weekends are more appropriate because a lot of people do not work on Saturdays and Sundays,” he said.
At the same time, Ting also mentioned that more tree pruning work was carried out along Jalan Tunku Osman on Saturday.
He said this was to prevent tree branches from falling during thunderstorms, further endangering road users.
Recently, a car parked in the Sibu Town Square area was damaged due to a fallen tree branch following a thunderstorm.
