KUCHING: The Sarawak government always strives for justice for all communities regardless of religion and race in developing the state in a peaceful and prosperous manner.
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari said Sarawak takes the example of Prophet Muhammad, who established a charter to govern the country known as the Madinah Charter.
Madinah Charter, he said, stresses justice and governance between Muslims and non-Muslims.
“The practice of religious tolerance was clearly demonstrated when Prophet Muhammad signed an agreement with the monks at St Catherine’s Monastery at the foot of Mount Sinai in 627 AD.
“This agreement was recorded in world history as a treaty document reflecting the nobility of his character in interfaith relations.
“Hence, the Sarawak government takes this as a lesson because the state has a multi-racial and multi-religious society,” he said in his speech at the state-level Maulidur Rasul assembly and procession held at Padang Merdeka today.
It was graced by Head of State Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud and wife Toh Puan Datuk Patinggi Raghad Kurdi Taib.
On Maulidur Rasul, he said it is a day to remember the struggles of Prophet Muhammad and draw inspiration from his efforts to uphold justice and continue preaching Islam throughout the region.
“Prophet Muhammad was a leader, administrator and commander, and he was a strategic figure who could spread Islam worldwide.
“This is how we manage the world today by adopting Prophet Muhammad’s approach,” he said.
Also present were Abang Johari’s wife Puan Sri Datuk Amar Juma’ani Tuanku Bujang, State Legislative Assembly (DUN) Speaker Tan Sri Datuk Amar Asfia Awang Nassar and wife Puan Sri Datin Amar Fatimah Iskandar, and state and federal ministers.
