KUCHING: Weak El Nino conditions are expected to last until May this year, according to the state Meteorological Department.
It said there was no significant increase in the temperatures recorded at most stations in Sarawak.
“We expect fair weather conditions for the next few days in most divisions. However, the interior parts of Sarawak such as Kapit, Miri (Marudi and Telang Usan District) and interior Limbang may experience isolated rain showers in the evening.
According to the Malaysian Meteorological Department (Met), heat wave occurs when the maximum daily temperature is more than 37 degree Celcius for three consecutive days.
However, for the past 30 days, most of the meteorological stations in Sarawak had recorded maximum daily temperatures of less than 37 degree Celcius except in Lundu, which recorded 39 degree Celcius on March 2 and 3.
However, on March 4, the reading in Lundu dropped to 35.1 degree Celcius.
The department added that the dry condition in Sarawak was expected to last for another three or four days.
“This condition is due to less cloud coverage and low rainfall amount which normally happen during the end of the northeast monsoon,” it explained.
It advised the public to follow the authorities’ instructions not to do open burning, to limit their outdoor activities and to hydrate themselves, especially during the hot and dry weather.
