KUCHING: The Sarawak government will continue to share its wealth and provide assistance to its people regardless of race and religion.
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said part of the state’s nearly RM12 billion revenue received for the year 2022 will go to Unit for Other Religions (UNIFOR).
“You pray to God, and God listens and that is why we got almost RM12 billion in revenue.
“So, I share it with UNIFOR by increasing the fund to RM100 million this year. Why? Because we want to share (our wealth),” he said at the Malaysia Interfaith Harmony Week Forum 2023 organised by UNIFOR which was held at the Pullman Hotel here today (Feb 20).
The Premier added the purpose of UNIFOR was to help the non-Muslims as well as mission schools.
Later speaking to reporters after the event, Abang Johari said a large portion of the RM100 million would be used to repair mission schools particularly those that are dilapidated including Chinese schools in the state, while part of it would go towards repairing houses of worship.
He pointed out that with the assistance from UNIFOR, the mission schools need not wait for assistance from the Ministry of Education (MoE), adding that it was part of the state government’s effort in helping the mission schools.
“So, we (Sarawak government through UNIFOR) help them including Chinese primary schools,” he said.
