KUCHING: Despite flash flood striking Kampung Sinar Budi Baru in Batu Kawah here this morning (Jan 28), a wedding reception in the village continued.
Persistent heavy rain from 3 am onwards caused the flood, affecting about 40 houses in the area.
Village Development and Security Committees (JKKK) Secretary Mohammad Iskandar Azahaman said that flash floods are a recurring issue in the village, especially after more than two hours of rainfall.
The main cause, he said, is the village’s low-lying location and problems with the drainage system.
The JKKK, anticipating such floods, had prepared boats for evacuation and arranged halls for residents potentially affected, Azahaman added.
He also said that the Batu Kawah district office is closely monitoring the situation, with residents waiting for further directives.
“If the water level doesn’t go down within 24 hours, relocation will be necessary. For now, we advise villagers to remain in the area until new information is provided,” Iskandar told New Sarawak Tribune.
He added that Padawan Municipal Council (PMC) chairman Tan Kai was on-site assessing the situation, accompanied by members of the People’s Volunteer Corps (Rela).
