KUCHING: Datuk Wee Hong Seng has been sworn in as Kuching South City Council (MBKS) mayor for a second term.
The swearing-in ceremony was held via Zoom on Wednesday (Sept 1).
Wee said the past two years were challenging for everyone, especially frontliners, due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
“Many among us were utterly exhausted in controlling and battling the virus, however, our spirit to serve the people remains intact.
“We have since learnt how to work together hand in hand with community leaders, non-governmental organisations, associations, and the residents of Kuching South.
“The pandemic took away many precious things from us, but at the same time, brought us together closer than before.”
He also noted that by working together, Sarawak became the fastest state in achieving optimum vaccination rate.
Wee added that people now learnt to sanitise properly, practice physical distancing, wear face masks and adopt effective means in preventing further infection.
“We are still far from winning the war, and as we continue to soldier on, it is my personal commitment, that no community shall be left behind.”
During the swearing in ceremony, Sarawak Local Government and Housing Minister Datuk Seri Dr Sim Kui Hian congratulated Wee on his re-appointment and expressed gratitude to him for the hard work and dedication towards Kuching South residents.
“For the past two years, I believe that the public have witnessed the impact the mayor has made since he was appointed in September 2019.
“I also want to thank MBKS for allowing its community hall to be used by the Ministry of Health as a Covid-19 One Stop Centre, the enforcement team, the disinfection team from Public Health Division and last but not least, the waste collectors.”
Also joining the ceremony were Assistant Local Government Minister Datuk Dr Penguang Manggil, the ministry’s permanent secretary Datuk Antonio Khati Galis, MBKS deputy mayor Hilmy Othman, MBKS acting city secretary Zainab Marzali, MBKS members and senior officials.
