KUCHING: Datuk Wee Hong Seng claimed that he is unsure of his status as a potential candidate for the 15th General Election (GE15) on behalf of the Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP).
According to the Kuching City South Council (MBKS) mayor, he also does not know when the general election will be held.
“I heard nothing about the election. So no comment,” he told reporters when met after the electric and electronic e-waste buy-back campaign at Mayor Song Swee Guan Park here today.
When pressed further on whether he would be keen if he is chosen as a candidate, Wee said he would continue his duty as mayor for the time being.
“As far as I am concerned, I am the mayor until the end of the year. So let me finish my duty as a mayor,” he said.
Wee, who is also the Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Pending branch vice chairman, added that he has been busy performing his duties as mayor on the ground, and that this is not an indication that he could become a potential candidate.
“The point is, if I can, I’ll attempt to accept every invitation that is sent to me because doing so will allow us to better understand the community and will also provide us an opportunity to learn about any problems that may be occurring there.
“I am not a sit-in-an-office mayor. I think it is important that we go to the ground and that is the only way we can see for ourselves rather than hearsay,” he pointed out.
On whether the SUPP Pending branch has discussed candidacy, Wee said he would leave it to the party branch chairman Datuk Seri Dr Sim Kui Hian, who is also the Deputy Premier, to comment.
“Of course, I believe that every branch should put out a candidate.
“Because like what Dr Sim mentioned, all the parliamentary constituencies have either two to three state constituencies under it, so it is only fair that everybody lists out the person they want to be the candidate, and from there a winnable candidate will be selected.
“So I think that should be the criteria. And we leave it to the top leadership to decide,” he said.
Earlier, commenting on public issues under the jurisdiction of MBKS, Wee said he appreciated the public voicing out any matters and hoped they could be conveyed through the proper channel.
“The expectations now are very high – people (raise the issues) on social media and all that.
“I do appreciate people looking at those issues and sending them through the right channel so that they can reach us, and we will try to act as soon as possible,” he said.
