BETONG: Sarawak’s Samuel Fraklyn Edward lifted the barbells to a silver medal in the men’s +96kg weightlifting category today at the Tan Sri Datuk Amar Stephen Kalong Ningkan Sports Hall.
His achievement broke Sarawak’s medal drought on the final day of the event, marking the state’s first medal in several days.
“I honestly didn’t expect to win silver. This is the most precious gift, especially since this is my last appearance at SUKMA and my first-ever medal in the games,” Samuel said when interviewed at the sports hall.
Samuel’s silver was secured with a total lift of 262kg. The gold medal was claimed by Pahang’s Muhammad Farris Haikal Kamarul with a lift of 300kg, while the bronze went to Perak’s Mohamad Farid Izwan Nor Azizol Hamdan, who lifted 235kg.
Samuel credited his success to the unwavering support of his coach and family.
“My coach and family constantly encouraged me not to give up. Also, never stop praying, even in the face of great challenges. Believe that God is with you every step of the way,” he added.
The 21-year-old said he would often shout to release tension before competing and always prayed silently in his heart.
Looking ahead, Samuel plans to use the incentives provided by the Sarawak government to further his studies and pursue a bachelor’s degree.
Samuel’s father, Edward Sigi, 53, was present along with other family members to support him. He expressed pride in his son’s achievement but emphasized the importance of education.
“As parents, my wife Jenny Solomon and I always support Samuel’s career, and we are very proud of his success. However, I want our youngest son to continue his studies to a higher level,” Edward said.
