BALI: Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB) is eager to share its expertise and renewable energy with other neighbouring countries.
Group chief executive officer Datuk Sharbini Suhaili said the utility company has developed several hydropower projects which allowed SEB to change and elevate its generation mix from 92 per cent hydrocarbon in 2010 to 70 per cent renewable hydropower in 2015.
He said this allowed SEB to reduce the carbon emission intensity of its grid by 72 per cent from 2010 to 2020 which contributes towards Malaysia achieving it COP21 targets.
“The next step is for us to share our renewable energy with our neighbours. We have been exporting power to West Kalimantan, Indonesia since 2016.
“Next year, we will export to Sabah as we have a power exchange agreement with Sabah Electricity. We are also talking to Brunei and Singapore. For Singapore, we are talking about undersea power export,” he said when met by reporters at Sheraton Kuta Bali Resort yesterday (Oct 30).
Sharbini said the idea is for SEB to share its renewable energy with neighbouring countries and to assist them in their energy transition.
“At the same time, this will allow us to kickstart the Asean power grid which we have been talking about since 2009. We believe that Sarawak Energy is leading the development of the Borneo grid by connecting West Kalimantan and Sabah, then Brunei and later to Singapore.
“Once we connect to Singapore, this will expand to the Trans-Asean power grid. We hope that the whole region will be interconnected so that we can share our renewable energy sources with our neighbours and help them transition to a greener economy,” he said.
On Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg as one of the invited esteemed speakers for the congress’ opening ceremony, Sharbini described it as a great honour.
“It is indeed a great honour to see and for our Premier to be on the same stage of President of Republic of Indonesia Joko Widodo. He will be sharing about Sarawak’s shift towards hydropower and our drive towards a greener and sustainable future for everybody by leveraging on the hydropower potential that we have,” he said.
