KUCHING: Bandar Kuching Member of Parliament, Dr Kelvin Yii paid a courtesy visit to Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Mayor, Dato James Chan Khay Syn and his officers at the latter’s office at Padungan yesterday.
During the visit, several issues were discussed especially on the relationship between both the federal government and the local council (MBKS), and how both can better work together for the good of the people of Kuching.
Kevin said they identified different critical areas which needed urgent attention including the issues of flash flood and inadequate drainage in a few areas around Kuching.
These areas include Jalan Penyau, Foochow Road, Jalan Kumpang, Jalan Laksamana, Taman Bong Chin, off Rock Road, Jalan Mendu and many others in the vicinity of Bandar Kuching. Many of the residents in these areas have faced issues of flash floods for many years, but there hasn’t been much of an effective solution even after all these years.
“In order to address this chronic issue, there is a need for better cooperation between the relevant agencies including the local council, Department of Drainage and Irrigation (DID) and also JKR. A proper drainage master plan must be formulated by the relevant authorities to cater for not only the need for the current situation, but also for future developments in the city.
“We will also do our part on the platform that we have to ensure adequate allocations to address such problems are obtained and properly used and benefit the people directly,” he added.
Dr Kelvin Yii also raised other complaints by the public including the request by some vendors in Kenyalang Wet Market to install more ceiling fans for the comfort and convenience of the hawkers and also visitors to the market. Besides that, he also highlighted the need for urgent repairs to the leaking roof of Sg Apong Wet Market that has affected the business of the vendors there and also put them in danger especially how it could damage the electrical appliances and plugs in the area. There are also complaints that the market cleanliness and hygiene is not properly taken care of by the contractor engaged by MBKS, which they have agreed to look into.
“We are looking forward to greater cooperation and work together professionally with the different departments including the local council to make sure issues that have been plaguing the residents of Bandar Kuching are addressed properly and the allocations are being used responsibly to directly benefit the people,” he said.
