KUCHING: The Wesak Day celebration has brought together a throng of 5000 Buddhist devotees, gathered at the Kuching South City Hall (MBKS) building yesterday (May 11).
Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian said Kuching, amidst the lush forests, and amidst reflections on global religions, Wesak celebrations resonate deeply.
“The essence of Wesak, beyond commemorating Buddha’s life events, embodies the spirit of Buddhism. This year marks 2560 years of Buddhism, emphasising harmonious coexistence.
“Amidst the complexities of modernity, this ethos holds significance, impacting various facets including business. Today’s festivities are a testament to unity and the enduring values upheld by practitioners worldwide,” he said when officiating at the procession.
The procession took the route from MBKS building towards Jalan Ang Cheng Ho and returned back to the starting point.
Wesak, alternatively known as Vesak or Buddha Day, stands as a cornerstone among Buddhist festivals, commemorating the birth of Buddha and, for many practitioners, acknowledging his enlightenment—a pivotal moment in which he unravelled the essence of existence.
Beyond mere festivity, Wesak prompts introspection, inviting adherents to contemplate Buddha’s teachings and embrace the profound essence of Buddhist philosophy.
