KUCHING: A local philanthropist praised Sarawak for its religious and ethnic tolerance among the multiracial society.
Kuan Chee Heng, fondly known as ‘Uncle Kentang’, said Sarawak indeed is seen as a role model of unity in Malaysia.
“You (Sarawakians) are great people. I really think that West Malaysia should learn from Sarawak,” he said in an interview through a live video conference yesterday.
He was invited as a special guest to share on his charity work at a hi-tea gathering entitled ‘Let’s Talk Peace and Harmony: Helping without Borders’ at the Sarawak Islamic Information Centre (SIIC) which was held in conjunction with the centre’s 12th anniversary.
“I love Kuching, and I love Sarawak,” he said, adding that he would visit the state once the Covid-19 situation improves.
Kuan, known for his philanthropic works, said he feels privileged to be able to help those in need especially during the pandemic.
“I too faced hardship before, and now that I am able to provide help, I think we should all help the needy or those who are unwell whenever we can,” he said.
He said providing assistance in terms of food, financial assistance and shelter was important as it can lessen the burden of those in need.
“So, Sarawakians do not worry, we are here to assist you, we are here to help you. This is our promise to you,” he said.
