KUCHING: The tradition continues with once again the iconic Kuching White Cat statue here being dressed up for the Christmas celebration.
However, with a difference this year — the decorations are more special with decorative items made from recycled tires.
Said Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng: “We have the Santa Clause and Christmas tree made from recycled tyres, and we would like to thank Zha Environmental Sdn Bhd for their contribution.
“And I call on the community as a whole to be more creative as you can make a lot of things from recycled items, and I think this will be one thing that we always want to do, using recycled items for decorations.
“So we will be having more of this, and hopefully next year for Chinese New Year, the Year of Dragon, we are thinking of how to use tyres to shape a dragon,” he said after the lighting-up ceremony of the White Cat statue yesterday (Dec 14).
Meanwhile, Roman Catholic Archbishop of Kuching Archdiocese Simon Poh who was also present, took the opportunity to extend Christmas greetings to the Christian community.
“Christmas is about sharing, peace, and Kuching being a City of Unity, we want to extend this unity beyond Kuching. We extend goodwill to the people of Sarawak and Malaysia,” he said.
