KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia’s wholesale and retail trade sales value rose 8.6 per cent to RM106 billion in November 2018 as compared to the corresponding period of 2017.
In a statement yesterday, the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) Chief Statistician, Datuk Seri Mohd Uzir Mahidin, said the increase was contributed by retail trade at 12.6 per cent.
“The expansion was propelled by a double-digit sales performance in non-specialised stores, sales in specialised stores, sales not in stalls or markets, sales of household equipment in specialised stores and sales of food, beverages & tobacco in specialised stores,” he said.
He also said against October 2018, the sales value increased marginally at 0.2 per cent, supported by the retail trade sub-sector which grew marginally at 2.1 per cent, as well as motor vehicles with a growth of 1.3 per cent.
Meanwhile, within the same period, the wholesale trade sub-sector recorded negative growth of 1.6 per cent. Mohd Uzir said in terms of volume index, wholesale and retail trade rose 8.4 per cent as against the same month of the previous year.
“The increase was mainly driven by retail trade registering 12.3 per cent, the second highest attained after August 2018 at 13.9 per cent.
“The wholesale trade and motor vehicles sub-sectors also expanded 6.2 per cent and 2.9 per cent respectively, within the same period,” he added. –Bernama
