KUCHING: A 67-year-old man living alone in a dilapidated house in Batu Kawa has received support from a local non-governmental organisation (NGO), Hope Place, after a relative asked for help.

Despite battling heart problems and diabetes, former labourer, Sinin Nanam, struggles to make ends meet by collecting discarded cans around Batu Kawa, earning up to RM18 a day with the help of his old motorcycle.

Due to his health problems, he is on blood thinning medication and insulin and uses his already limited income to cover the cost of his medical expenses.

Widowed for almost a decade, Sinin has two adult children; the eldest resides in Bintulu and the second in Miri.

Because of minimal financial support, Sinin is left to fend for himself, finding ways to earn enough income to cover his daily necessities and survive on his own.

Sinin lives a solitary, simple life in his deteriorating wooden house, which has rotting structures and a leaking roof; he cooks for himself daily and spends his free time making small wooden tables and stools while listening to his old radio.
