Wife surrenders to fate as search for missing policeman enters eighth day

KAPIT: The wife of Constable (PC) Iskandar Ibrahim, the final victim of a boat tragedy at Batang Baleh, has surrendered to divine decree after an arduous eight-day search and rescue (SAR) mission failed to locate her husband.

In a heartfelt message shared on her Facebook account today (March 14), Anis Nur Ezzati conveyed her sentiments regarding the ongoing search efforts.

“Today marks the eighth day of searching for my husband. Despite all the dedicated efforts by everyone involved, we have yet to find him.

“However, I have come to accept and submit to the will of God,” she said.

She also appealed for continued prayers from the public, that her husband would be found regardless of his condition.

“I humbly ask for your continued prayers. Let us pray earnestly that God may bring him back to us, no matter the circumstances.”

The search for the 28-year-old policeman from Kelantan, has utilised various methods, including assistance from the K9 units of the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) and the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM).

Additionally, the PDRM drone unit has been deployed to aid in aerial reconnaissance.

The search operation has spanned a radius of 10km from the location where the incident occurred near SK Lepong Baleh to the waters surrounding Kampung Baru and Kapit market, as well as upstream and downstream areas of Batang Baleh.

At the time of writing, the search is still ongoing.

The tragic incident happened on March 7 around 5pm when five passengers, including PC Iskandar, had boarded a boat carrying 35kg of explosives and detonators from Kuching to Nanga Tulie.

According to a statement by Kapit OCPD DSP Rohana Nanu, the boat veered slightly upstream and encountered whirlpool, leading to its capsizing.

“One passenger, identified as 47-year-old Moses Ngui, was rescued by members of the public, while the remaining four went missing,” she said.

The four missing individuals were identified as PC Iskandar, 51-year-old Sgt Jonathan Lambet, and civilians 44-year-old Jack Balan and 47-year-old Amerson John Nain.

On March 9, authorities successfully located and recovered the bodies of Sgt Jonathan, Jack, and Amerson from three separate locations.

The first discovery was made when Jack’s body was found floating in Pulau Kerto waters around 10am.

Amerson’s body was subsequently discovered afloat in Batang Lebaan around 12pm, followed by Sgt Jonathan’s body, which was spotted floating near the Kapit market around 4pm.
