LONDON: The total prize money fund for this year’s Wimbledon Championships will increase to a record of £50 million, the All England Lawn Tennis Club announced here on Thursday, reported Xinhua.
With an 11.9 per cent increase on £44.7 million last year, players in every round and across every event will enjoy a larger paycheck.
The men’s and women’s singles champions and runners-up will receive £2.7 million and £1.4 million respectively. First round prize money for the singles competition is set at £60,000.
Deborah Jevans, Chair of the All England Club, said a thriving, successful Championships gives them the opportunity to give back to the sport, to their local community and to strategically invest for the future.
“I am particularly pleased that we have been able to increase prize money for the wheelchair and quad wheelchair competitions to £1 million for the first time,” she said.
The 137th Wimbledon Championships will be held between July 1 and 14. – BERNAMA-XINHUA
