KUCHING: A 27-year-old woman was arrested by the police for alleged drug possession here on Saturday.

State NCID chief Supt Hasnir Abdul Hamid said acting on information obtained through surveillance, a team of police from the Kuching district police headquarters detained a woman at a stairway of an apartment for suspicion of drug abuse at 12.15am.

“Further inspections revealed a bag pack and in it was a translucent plastic packaging containing three smaller translucent plastic packaging of various sizes containing crystalline substance believed to be methamphetamine, weighing 5.34 gramme with an estimated street value worth RM800,” he said when contacted.

The suspect from Miri was then taken to the Kuching district police headquarters where she was tested positive for methamphetamine.

He added that the suspect has no prior criminal record.

A remand order has been requested against the suspect to facilitate investigation under Section 39A (1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, and Section 15(1)(a) of the same Act.

“If convicted, Section 39A (1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 carries a sentence of not less than two years imprisonment and not more than five years and is punishable to whipping of not less than three strokes and not more than nine strokes,” he stressed.

The state NCID appreciates the cooperation conveyed by the public in providing information on drug abuse activities.
