Kathleen Gelang Manggat has always been interested in creating unique and special bouquets. With her skills, the 27-year-old Iban woman from Lubok Antu, Sri Aman, is now running a full-time home-based hand bouquet business.
“I started the business in November of last year. The hours I work vary depending on the customers,” she said.
She is based in Kota Samarahan and works with her sister to provide a surprise service. She promotes her business through Facebook and WhatsApp.
Despite the fact that she had only recently begun, the response from customers had been positive. But, of course, she faces a number of challenges.
“There are lots of challenges, especially when it comes to dealing with customer requests. Some of them include calls that are not returned and incorrect addresses provided by customers.
“Also, although the cost of materials increased significantly during the COVID-19 period, we did not raise our sales price,” she said.
Despite all difficulties, she remained steady. Her husband and family are her rock, always encouraging and supporting her in her efforts.
“I hope to succeed in this business and one day be able to open my own company with my own management team.
“My advice to small traders out there is to not give up on doing something; it’s normal to struggle to get customers at first, but once you do, trust that the sustenance will always be there,” she said.
Her bouquet starts at RM30 and goes up from there depending on the customer’s request.
