KUCHING: A woman has been fined RM2,900 or sentenced to nine months in prison by the Magistrates’ Court for her involvement in drug abuse, specifically methamphetamine and amphetamine.
Ng Siew Lan, 35, pleaded guilty to the charge, which was read by an interpreter before Magistrate Mason Jaro Lenya Barayan.
The charge sheet indicated that Ng was accused of possessing methamphetamine and amphetamine at the Narcotics Crime Investigation Department Office of IPD Padawan, around 7.55pm on Oct 24, 2022.
She was charged under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries a maximum fine of RM5,000 or imprisonment for up to two years, as well as immediate supervision by an officer for a period not less than two years and not exceeding three years.
Magistrate Mason Jaro ordered Ng to be placed under police supervision for two years after serving her sentence.
The case’s facts revealed that the initial urine screening of the accused tested positive for drugs when she was detained at the Narcotics Crime Investigation Department of Padawan.
A urine sample was then taken to the Pathology Department of Sarawak General Hospital, and the report confirmed that the accused tested positive for methamphetamine and amphetamine.
The prosecution of the case was handled by deputy public prosecutor Inspector Merylene Lindan Andrew Mang while the accused was not represented by a lawyer.
