KUCHING: A 38-year-old woman has been fined RM2,000, with a default sentence of one month in jail, by Magistrate Zubaidah Sharkawi at the Magistrates’ Court here.
Intia Empati pleaded guilty to a charge under Section 9(1) of the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953, which, if convicted, can result in a fine of up to RM5,000, a jail term of up to six months, or both.
The case against Intia stemmed from her possession of illegal public lottery tickets, which were discovered at an eatery in Jalan Batu 6 at around 4.50pm on May 17.
The facts of the case reveal that a police team from the Padawan Criminal Investigation Division (CID) conducted a raid at the eatery based on suspicions of unlicensed gambling activities taking place.
During the raid, Intia was apprehended, and authorities seized a piece of paper, RM42 in cash, and a phone believed to contain messages related to unlicensed public lottery tickets.
Subsequent investigations, including a report from a gambling expert, confirmed that the phone in her possession did indeed contain public lottery tickets.
Inspector Nur Shafiqa Nyaie Ilin served as the prosecutor in the case while Intia did not have legal representation during the proceedings.
