KUCHING: A woman from Muar, Johor was sentenced to eight months’ jail by the Magistrate’s Court for deceiving a man to rent her a Toyota Alphard luxury multipurpose vehicle (MPV) and suffering a loss of RM343,000, two years ago.
The accused Ngiw May Ling, 46, pleaded guilty to the charge which was read out by an interpreter before magistrate Zubaidah Sharkawi.
The court ruled that the accused should serve her jail term starting on Thursday (Feb 10).
Based on the charge, she was accused of deceiving Nicholas Lee, 35, into believing to rent a Toyota Alphard luxury MPV at Kuching International Airport (KIA), at about 12.30pm on Oct 2, 2020.
The accused is charged under Section 403 of the Penal Code which carries a jail term of not less than six months and not exceeding five years and whipping and is liable to a fine, if convicted.
Based on the evidence of the case, the accused had come to meet the complainant to rent a luxury MPV at the airport.
The accused also made a deposit payment of RM200 on Sept 29, 2020 to an account belonging to a car rental company.
A few days later, the accused again made a payment of RM3,500 in cash to rent for five days for the purpose of solemnising a marriage.
After the rental period of the car expired, the woman failed to return it to the complainant as promised and found that the accused had returned via KIA on Oct 2, 2020.
The complainant suffered a loss of RM343,000 until a police report was lodged because his vehicle was not returned and was not found.
Based on a tip-off, the accused was arrested by police from the Subang Jaya District Commercial Crime Investigation Division (BSJKD), around 12.50 pm on Nov 27, 2020 at Subang Jaya district police station, Selangor.
The prosecution of the case was handled by Insp Nur Syafiqa Nyaie Ilin while the accused was not represented by a lawyer.
