SIBU: A woman was cheated of RM9,000 in an overseas job scam which promised a lucrative salary.
Sibu police chief ACP Stanley Jonathan Ringgit said on May 15, the self-employed woman, 25, while browsing her Facebook account saw an advertisement with the headline, “Sibu Job Vacancy.”
The advertisement was put up by a person who identified himself as Ming Zai, an agent for overseas jobs.
“The victim was interested to work at a restaurant in Australia which offers high salary. She subsequently contacted a man named only as Sam through the mobile application WeChat to find out more about the job,” he added.
Believing that the job was a genuine one, the woman made a payment of RM9,000 for air fares and other fees through four bank transfers between May 15 to 17.
“However, after she had made the RM9,000 payment she was asked again to pay another RM2,500 as processing fee for her travel documents to Australia,” Stanley said.
It was only then that the woman realised that she had been cheated.
The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating.
