KUCHING: The Magistrate’s Court has sentenced a woman to a fine of RM1,000 or one month in jail today for making a false police report claiming that she was robbed to avoid paying a fine to make a new identity card.
The accused, Victoria Soh Siew Ying, 39, pleaded guilty to the charge which was read out by an interpreter before Magistrate Zubaidah Sharkawi.
According to the charges, she committed the offense at the Sungai Maong Police Station at around 10.57am on August 31.
Therefore, she was charged under Section 182 of the Penal Code, which carries a jail term of up to six months or a fine of up to RM2,000 or both, if convicted.
According to the facts of the case, the accused claimed that she was robbed by two men on a motorcycle by a bank in Jalan Laksamana Cheng Ho.
She informed the police that the stolen items were RM5,600 in cash, an identity card, a driver’s license, a bank ATM card and a gold chain worth RM3,000.
The results of the investigation found that the report made by the accused was false and deliberately fabricated the story.
Closed circuit camera (CCTV) footage also found that there was no such incident happened as reported by the accused.
It is understood that the accused admitted that her identity card had been lost and dropped in a supermarket area while returning home in Sibu.
She did so because she wanted to avoid paying the fine for the lost identity card.
The prosecution of the case was handled by Prosecuting Officer Inspector Nur Syafiqa Nyaie Ilin while the accused was not represented by a lawyer.
